Most chips in granite and quartz can be filled and polished so they are hard to find again. Chips gather where pans and dishes strike: the front edge, the corners and the rim of an undermount sink opening.
The chip is cleaned, then filled with a two-part epoxy or polyester adhesive pigmented to match the stone, tested on a hidden spot first. Once it cures, the fill is shaved flush with a flat razor, sanded with fine grits such as 400 and then 800, and polished to the surrounding finish, the sequence set out in Dynamic Stone Tools' repair guide.
Engineered quartz is mostly crushed quartz held in resin, so its repairs use a very thin colorless or color-matched acrylic fill. Caesarstone's own care guidance notes that some damage can be restored by a technical specialist and tells owners to contact their fabricator first.
A fill hides a chip; it does not rebuild a missing corner the size of a thumb on a busy edge. Large edge losses may need a new edge profile ground along the whole run, which we price at the inspection.
A crack through the slab is judged on the support beneath it before anything else, because a crack over a sagging cabinet will reopen after any repair. We check the boxes under the crack for level, look at the overhang and its brackets, and look for a gap between the stone and the cabinet tops.
Heat can crack or discolor quartz as well. Caesarstone warns against temperatures above about 300 degrees Fahrenheit and sudden changes, so a mark beside the cooktop is often heat damage rather than impact.
A failed seam is usually a support problem showing through the stone. When one cabinet settles, the two pieces either side of the joint drift apart or one edge sits higher than the other, and the adhesive between them lets go.
The fix corrects the cause first. The pieces are brought back level with each other, the cabinet under the low side is shimmed or secured, the old adhesive is cleaned out, and the seam is filled again with a color-matched adhesive. EuroStone's installation guide aims for a seam width of one to two millimeters on cabinets level within an eighth of an inch over ten feet.
If a piece has cracked at the seam, or the cabinets beneath need replacing, a re-joined seam will not hold. Then a new piece, or a new top, is the better spend.
Repairs on softer surfaces depend on what is underneath the damage as much as the damage itself.
Laminate is a thin sheet, under 2 millimeters, glued to a core of MDF or chipboard. A lifting edge strip can often be glued back down. A burn through the sheet, or a core that has taken water, cannot be fixed well, because particle board swells and discolors when it absorbs moisture and does not return to shape.
Solid surface tops such as Corian are one material all the way through, so scratches can be sanded out and seams made almost invisible. Most damage on solid surface is a repair, not a replacement.
Marble is calcite or dolomite that acids etch, so vinegar and lemon leave dull marks, and it is soft and porous enough to scratch and stain. An etch is surface dulling rather than a crack, and we look at it on site before saying what it needs.
A repair quote should tell you plainly when replacement is the better buy, and ours does. Repair wins when the damage is local and the stone is sound. Replacement wins when the damage is a symptom of something larger.
